Regulation, categories and the platforms moving first across the region.
The GCC's embedded insurance story is usually told as one market. It isn't. Each regulator, each category and each distribution channel is moving at its own speed — and the platforms winning are the ones reading the differences correctly.
Saudi Arabia: regulated and accelerating
The Insurance Authority's supervision of digital distribution gives Saudi platforms something rare: a compliant path to selling real cover without holding an insurance license. Motor leads on volume — mandatory cover plus the used-car boom — with SME medical close behind on value.
The categories, ranked by readiness
- Motor: mandatory, data-rich, instant issuance — the beachhead everywhere.
- SME medical: high premium, CCHI-compliant plans, sold at the moment of hiring.
- Travel: visa-driven demand with perfectly predictable timing.
- Property: rising with mortgage growth; the data layer is the challenge.
- Specialty (livestock, devices, events): small books, loyal niches, no incumbents.
What the first movers share
They own the transaction, they own the customer data that pre-fills the quote, and they treat insurance as a product line with its own P&L — not a banner ad. The revenue-share economics reward exactly that seriousness.
Distribution is no longer the insurer's problem. It's the platform's opportunity.
